PUBLIC ART PROJECT
AIR
Artist in Vacancy
site-specific sound installation with the Newburgh Community Landbank
29 Chambers St
Newburgh, NY
August - September 2019

The title of this project refers to A.I.R. (Artist In Residency) signs posted on buildings in New York City to alert the Fire Department of artists living in what appeared to be empty industrial spaces, the conceptual precedent for AIV (Artist in Vacancy), as well as air, the substance that we breathe. The the main source material will be derived from the text of The US Constitution, drawing attention to Newburgh as a historic, political site, as well as the current state of politics in the United States. The text will be erased with the exception of the commas, the musical notation for the breath, creating an intervention that will be vocally performed and recorded, breathing life into a more inclusive understanding of its intended meaning. The sound installation will be located at a site in the process of construction, allowing convergences between the body as corporeal and architectural sites of agency.
